What is Senior Fitness?
It’s a virtual platform created to allow senior citizens to safely perform physical activity, without having to leave their home.
The workout routines have been designed by expert physical therapists. Each one of the exercises seeks to improve mobility, coordination, stability, aerobic capacity, and strength, along with preventing the risk of injury.
It is very important for senior citizens to engage in physical activity, because doing so provides them with multiple benefits, such as:
- Strengthening of muscles and bones
- Mood improvements
- Improvements to quality of sleep
- Mitigation of biological changes caused by ageing
- Prevention of the risk of falling
- Prevention and reduction of the risk of developing diseases such as: diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, osteoporosis, obesity, depression and certain types of cancer (colon and breast)
The WHO recommends performing 150-300 minutes of physical activity per week, at a moderate intensity, or 75-150 at a vigorous intensity; in other words, between 20-40 minutes per day. One way to achieve this is through walks and supervised or planned exercises, just like those supplied by the Senior Fitness platform.
How does Senior Fitness work?
You will need a device with a functioning camera, and with an internet connection (a computer, mobile phone, tablet, etc.). Then, you must create a user to access the platform, and begin exercising in front of your screen.
A virtual coach will explain and show you the exercises which you will later have to perform, and check whether you have executed them correctly. This feedback is essential, because by becoming familiar with and correcting each exercise, you will be able to prevent and reduce potential risks of injury.
Routines last for around 25-30 minutes, and they include all types of exercises, with proper breaks between them. It’s very easy to use and you will be able to remain active from the comfort of your home or from anywhere else, in a safe and efficient manner!
